PROGRAM: Marcus Garvey Cultural Heritage
Program
Title:
Teacher
Location: Brooklyn
Reports to: Marcus Garvey Cultural Heritage
Program Associate
Organizational Mission:
Ifetayo's mission is to prepare young people and their
families for all aspects of their lives through comprehensive
and holistic programs that help to empower them to become
self-sufficient, productive adults who are actively engaged
in the improvement of their communities. This mission is
carried out as we work to achieve the five primary objectives
of the organization which are:
- to develop cultural awareness and self-esteem by exposing
youth and families to traditional African artistic forms
and their evolution into contemporary cultures;
- to provide youth, families and communities of African
descent with the tools required to become self-sufficient
and to transcend challenges that are perpetuated across
generations;
- to support youth, families and communities of African
descent to reach their optimum potential by attaining
a harmonious balance between the mind, body, and spirit
and through proper nutrition, exercise, and cultural awareness;
- to create leaders for local neighborhoods and international
communities, and
- to develop, document and disseminate a comprehensive,
African-centered approach to youth and community development.
Program Summary:
The Marcus Garvey Cultural Heritage Program is designed
to build cultural self-knowledge and personal self-esteem
among children of African descent by teaching them about
their heritage – a topic that does not always receive
sufficient time and attention in their schools. Program
areas include: Cultural History Classes, Malcolm X Annual
Scholar Lecture, Sankofa International Cultural Studies/Exchange,
and Language Institute and Film Series. This program introduces
students to the language, economics, and achievements of
peoples of African descent. Through classroom projects,
discussions with scholars of African and African-American
Studies, and field trips to historic sites, students become
familiar with the struggles and achievements of historic
and contemporary African cultures worldwide. The program
strongly emphasizes writing development and charges students
to become the authors and custodians of their own histories.
This program also offers International Exchange opportunities
where children and adults travel to countries outside of
the United States to fully immerse themselves in the culture
and learn about the history, language and cultural context
of the country.
